Class Newsletter

Kia Ora and welcome to Room 1!

My name is Lourda Lillis and I am your child’s teacher.  I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as and tell you a little about myself.

I come from Ireland.  I was teaching full time in Ireland for ten years before making the big move to New Zealand.   My family life is an interesting one…I am the youngest of 13 children, with 7 brothers and 5 sisters!! Most of my siblings live at home in Ireland, but I have one brother and one sister living in New York.

My hobbies include reading, swimming and music.  I do a little running, but not as much as I used to. I play Gaelic football and there are a few teams in Christchurch so it is a great way to feel a little closer to home once in a while!!

Below is an outline of what lies ahead for Term 1.
Religious Education
This term our major focus is learning about the life of Jesus and we will also cover Prayer, Lent, Holy Week and Easter.

The Inquiry topic this term has the theme of “Hear the cry of the earth and the poor” and it is a Caritas unit of work, which looks at preparing for Lent, with a particular focus on the experiences and challenges of people living in Cambodia.

We will continue to develop our number knowledge focusing on addition & subtraction to start.

We are focusing on drawing this term, and will incorporate this into our Inquiry topic. We will cover techniques such as observation, shape, shading, and proportion.

Our library day is Friday, and the children are allowed two new books each week. Please try and return library books and folders by Friday.

Homework – Beginning Next Week
Your child will have a reading book in their reading folder, as well as their Kluwell book. Please fill in the Kluwell book each night and write a comment on your child’s reading. Please note that we will only be giving out new books when the old ones are returned.

Your child will have 10 spellings a week. These will be tested on a Friday morning. Please help your child to learn these.

I look forward to the year ahead. I hope it’s a great one for all of us, and I look forward to working together to achieve wonderful things throughout the year.
Thank you, Miss Lillis
